Onyeka Onwenu Is Working On A Film To Narrate Her Journey In Music
Prominent Nigerian musician, Onyeka Onwenu, has talked about the fact that she is working on producing a film that will explore her experiences which are of a span of decades in the music industry.
Onwenu made this known during an interview with the ‘News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)’ on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, in Lagos. With her career that started in the 1970s, the ‘classy music personality’ has expressed that she is eager to share her firsthand account of the progression of Nigerian music.
Onwenu said: “I am currently working on a film that will chronicle my experiences in the music industry from the ’70s’ to the present day. Having been a part of this narrative for decades, I have a wealth of stories to share.”
In addition, as regard the film project, Onwenu talked about her efforts to release her ‘classic songs’, which will be in collaboration with emerging artistes – then promising her fans and music lovers a compilation of rebranded tracks, later in the year 2024.
She said: “I am rebranding my old songs and collaborating with new talents. My aim is to offer listeners a fresh perspective on timeless classics.”
Onwenu’s creative exploits are beyond the realm of music, as she recently released a single titled ‘Abu Otito’ (Songs of Praise) – and dedicated the proceeds from its streaming to support widows via the ‘Rose of Sharon Foundation’.
She said: “I am passionate about using music to address social issues. From supporting widows to promoting education among rural children, I strive to make a positive impact through my art.”
Contemplating on her philanthropic engagements, Onwenu shared her commitment to providing educational opportunities for underprivileged children in Abia State and the plan to expand her initiatives to Imo State.
She said further: “We do not only pay school fees directly to schools; we also offer civic education to instill a sense of cultural identity. These efforts represent my dedication to empowering future generations.”
In giving advice to fellow artistes amidst economic challenges, Onwenu highlighted the values of being resilient and having self-initiative.
“Hang in there and create opportunities for yourselves by highlighting the need for proactive approaches in navigating the ever-evolving music industry landscape” – she added.
Onwenu’s numerous contributions to music and the society at large emphasize her ‘enduring-legacy’ as a trailblazing artiste and philanthropist – and serve as inspiration for forthcoming generations.
“I have been part of the story right from time, and I am still moving forward, so I have a lot of stories to tell,” Onwenu said.
Apart from the film adventure, Onwenu opened up her plans to give new coloration to her ‘classic hits’ by collaborating with contemporary artistes. According to her, she aims to have a compilation of rebranded songs as a collection, thereby promising Nigerian music audiences that the release will be later in the year 2024.
Onwenu has utilized her music and its fadeless messages to promote Nigeria’s culture. Her music duet with King Sunny Ade titled ‘Wait for Me’, has remained evergreen. It is recollected and regarded always as a song with insightful lyrical message that was produced to help the ‘government-in-power then’ to fight against population explosion, with regulations through different family planning programmes designed by the government.
Her song, titled ‘African Woman’, really helped in projecting the innate beauty of the African woman, so as to be giving them a sense of pride and belonging amidst poverty, widowhood, rape, lack of care, hatred, humiliation, abandonment, among others.
Onwenu’s evergreen classic, Sodom and Gomorrah, is a biblical narrative of the popular story of the city of Sodom and Gomorrah, a city destroyed by God because of heedlessness and high level of immorality.
Some of her other evergreen songs include ‘Iyogogo’, ‘One Love’, ‘Dancing in the Sun’, and ‘Choices’, among others.

Wizkid Dedicates Upcoming Album To His Late Mum
Nigerian Afrobeats singer, Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, aka Wizkid, has announced that his sixth studio album would be dedicated to his late mum, Jane Morayo Balogun.
The ‘Ojuelegba’ hitmaker made the announcement in a video message shared via his social media platform on Saturday, June 1, 2024.
He also disclosed that the album, which is titled ‘Morayo’ and in honour of his late mum, would be released ‘very soon’.
Wizkid’s words: “My album ‘Morayo’, dedicated to my mum, the love of my life, drops very soon. Don’t dull. Don’t sleep.”
It could be recaled that Wizkid’s mother, Jane Dolapo Balogun, died on August 18, 2023, in London.
The singer said the pain of losing his mum ‘hurts deeply’.
In his words: “The pain is profound.”

Actress Patience Ozukor: I Rejected The Name-Tag ‘Liz Benson of Enugu’ On Me, To Have My Own Name-Tag ‘Patience Ozukor’
Nollywood veteran actress, Patience Ozokwor, has disclosed and talked about how people tried to impose titles and name-tags on her at the beginning of her career and how she handled it.
The veteran actress said when she began her acting career, people tried to compare her with legendary actress, Liz Benson, by tagging her as ‘Liz Benson of Enugu’ but she rejected the tag because she believes they are both unique.
She disclosed that she also rejected suggestions to answer her husband’s first name as her surname and instead chose to bear his family name.
She actually disclosed this in an interview session via a media platform.
Her words: “I don’t know how it started, all I know was that when I started my acting career and people started recognizing this woman from Enugu.”
“So, there was a time I came to Lagos for a shoot and people started saying, ‘That’s her, this woman from Enugu.’ They said, “You’re the ‘Liz Benson of Enugu.”
“I said, ‘No, with all due respect, I don’t want to be like Liz Benson, I want to be myself. I am ‘Patience Ozokwor of Enugu’.”
“And some people came and said, ‘You don’t even need to answer Patience Ozokwor again. Answer your husband’s first name Edmund; Patience Edmund.’
“I said, ‘No, because in Igbo land, you’re not just married by one man, you’re married by a family. I don’t know about other tribes.”
“So, my husband’s people, their name is Ozokwor. When you mention Ozokwor in any part of this world, people who know the Ozokwors would say ‘I know where she comes from’,” she concluded.
