Actress Toyin Abraham ‘Stretches Hand’ Of Friendship To Her Colleague, Funke Akindele
Nollywood actress and filmmaker, Toyin Abraham, has stretched a hand of friendship to her colleague and ‘sister’, Funke Akindele, after years of competitive rivalry between them in the movie industry.
In an extensive post on her Instagram page on Sunday, April 21, 2024, where she also attached a photo of Akindele, Toyin recalled the serious competition in the Yoruba movie industry years before now.
She highlighted that the competition was to be the ‘number one’ in the Yoruba movie industry, and the competition was so fierced that camps and enmity erupted, which made actors to be against one another.
Furthermore, she said the situation was caused by professional ‘gossips and hearsays’, which eventually brought about the ‘seed of discord’ in the industry.
In her words: “The number one cause of fights in the industry then was ‘he said, she said’ before the social media era. Dear Nollywood people, let me chip this in, stop tearing the industry down with your gossips. You have caused lots of damage with ‘he-said, she-said’.”
Toyin also narrated how she waited in the order while Akindele was the ‘main attraction’ of the Yoruba Nollywood, in the position of ‘second’ to the likes of veterans, Bukky Wright and Fathia Williams.
She said her desire to take over the stage of limelight from Akindele caused a serious competition between them.
Meanwhile, when Funke Akindele diversified into the English movie sector of Nollywood, Toyin Abraham took over as the favourite in the Yoruba movie industry before she also moved on to the English mlovie sector, subsequently.
Thus, the development led to a long-time competition between the two successful actresses.
In her words: “In the English industry, Aunty Funke and I continued the rivalry sort of. It pitted our fans against each other. We are two competitive Virgo women, we love to win and sometimes in that process, we splash dirt and mud. But with time, age, and more wisdom, I have realized we can compete without being negatively competitive.”
More so, Toyin Abraham has expressed appreciation to Funke Akindele for her great achievements in the movie industry, generally.
She commended Funke Akindele for always creating the path of success and inspiring others to achieve the what seems impossible.
Toyin Abraham also made a significant remark on how Funke Akindele made ₦1 billion from the box office, an achievement that was once considered enormous for a woman to behold.
In this light, she said Akindele’s ‘success story’ has taught other women to work harder, as she made reference to how Funke Akindele smashed her (Abraham) record at box office.
In her words: “Aunty Funke, I celebrate you for showing us what is possible. You are a winner. You sold over 1B, you made it possible for other women to dream.”
“You ran us on street with that 1B o, this year, many of us will move to 1B and we pray God makes you bigger. Thank you for making great movies and selling them like your life depends on it.”
“Sis, let’s compliment each other even in competition at the box office, I owe you one post in December (only 1 o, I need to sell market…Lol). I pray that God will make all your dreams come true. I admire you and wish you all the best” – Toyin concluded.
